What effects does the alloying element silicon have on material properties?

Silizium Si:

  • deoxidizes the steel; SiO2 (silicon dioxide) is formed which usually combines with other oxides (FeO - iron oxide, MnO manganese oxide,...) to form hard and brittle microstructural constituents called silicates
  • increases the strength and hardness
  • reduces the elongation at break, the material becomes brittle!
  • reduces the weldability of the material
