Tempered steel - the material that can be influenced

Properties of quenched and tempered steels

Quenched and tempered steels have a carbon content of between 0.2% and 0.6%.
It also has a high toughness, which can be influenced by changing the ratio of hardness and
temperature of the tempering process. Furthermore, quenched and tempered steels obtain a high tensile and
fatigue strength through the quenching and tempering process.
However, they are only weldable to a limited extent, so that this is only possible with preheating and postheating.
The limited weldability is due to the higher carbon content of the quenched and tempered steels. When quenched and
tempered steels are alloyed, the most commonly used alloying elements include chromium, manganese, molybdenum and nickel.

Extraction and use of tempered steels

In order to obtain heat-treatable steels, they are, as the name suggests, quenched and tempered. The "quenching and tempering" process consists of hardening, quenching and tempering. To do this, the material is first heated with the help of very high temperatures, followed by quenching. During quenching, the temperature of the material drops again quickly. This is followed by tempering, where the material is "tempered" at a lower temperature. The hardenability of the material can be determined with the help of a test according to Jominy.
This test is also called the "face quenching test".
Quenched and tempered steels are processed in an already quenched and tempered form. This is done non-cutting (laser cutting, deburring, round bending) or cutting (milling, turning, drilling or grinding).
Quenched and tempered steels are used, for example, as axles, bolts, screws or crankshafts. They are also used in constructions such as aircraft landing gears.

High strength is required in these constructions.
